The Children's cancer ward at St James Hospital in Leeds is one of the leading cancer treatments centers in Yorkshire. It is full of amazing children whose strength in such horrible situations touches everyone. With your support, we help keep the magic alive for hundreds of children who need your help every year.
‘Just walking through the children's cancer ward is heartbreaking. Little people almost lost in big beds, many with no hair, framing their tiny faces that have been destroyed by necessary chemotherapy. Tubes hanging down from their chests and out of their noses and brothers, sisters, parents sitting waiting hour after hour. Despite all of this, it's their brave smiles and the innocent trust that they radiate
These are the Little Heroes with cancer, who inspire all of us, to do everything we can to make their stay in hospital as comfortable as possible until they're healthy again. They are the reason why I not only support Little Heroes but became a director.
Imagine
Waking up one morning to be told your child has cancer.
Seeing your child with a tube hanging out of their chest and out of their nose.
Not being able to take your child to the cinema, bath them and take them swimming. Signing forms to allow toxic drugs to be pumped into their bodies, for weeks, months, even years. Blood transfusion after blood transfusion, infection after infection because they have no immune system. Having all this for up to three years. Being told that because of the treatment needed your child will be sterile, your child will have brain damage and your child will have lung, kidney, heart and liver damage, together with stunted growth. Being told that your child may need treatment for the rest of their life.
Family support
It is vital that we help children and families cope with what can inevitably be a stressful time.
We believe that the cancer unit at St James hospital is one of the best, the staff – whether they be doctors or support staff, are fantastic. For many of the families they are angels without wings.
Any parent will tell you that there is no worse experience than their child being ill. The hospital staff will tell you that what matters most to that child’s care is having their families around them and keeping the child’s spirits up.
Charitable donations mean we can provide support services to the children and families undergoing cancer treatment.
